Do You Know Who Leads New York City Public Schools?
Melissa Aviles Ramos leads New York City Public Schools, the biggest school system in the country. Before becoming Chancellor, she was in charge of connecting families and communities with schools. She ran important programs like NYC Literacy Hubs and Project Open Arms, which helps newcomers to New York.
As the new leader of New York City Public Schools, Aviles-Ramos plans to start important programs. These include NYC Reads for better reading skills and NYC Solves for math and job training. She also wants to focus on keeping schools safe, helping students stay healthy, training teachers, and working closely with families and communities.
Aviles-Ramos started as an English teacher in the Bronx, later becoming a principal and acting superintendent. She holds degrees from Fordham University and City College of New York, with leadership certificates from College of Saint Rose. A native New Yorker, Latina, and NYCPS parent, she brings diverse experience to her role.
